This type of Paintball game is played in the
great outdoors. Think of trees, rocks, streams and naturally rolling hills as
your bunkers. Imagine stalking your opponent with the sun high above you and a
gentle breeze camouflaging your movements in the tall grass. This is the way
Paintball was meant to be played. Unfortunately, the weather doesn't always co-operate, and that's when you have to take the game indoors. But for now, lets focus on what Woodsball entails. Woodsball is more about stealth and tactics than any other paintball game. It is more focused on the long game of hunting your opponent rather than running and shooting in the faster games like Speedball. You have to be very aware of what is going on around you, when you are playing outside, there are unlimited places for you or your opponent to hide. It is best to get to know the terrain prior to making any moves or you may end up with your foot lodged in a gopher hole while trying to get a shot off. Camouflage is very important in this game. You want to blend in with the landscape and if you are wearing a brightly colored jacket and your hopper is metallic blue, you will stand out and chances are that you will be eliminated very quickly. For the most part, paying attention to what is going on around you before moving or shooting will accomplish much more than rushing headlong into an ambush that you didn't know was there. Move slow and deliberate, watch for telltale movements in the grass and bushes. Watch for barrels sticking out from behind trees. Noticing things like this will win you the game as long as you act on them instead of reacting. Capture the Flag is the most common type of Woodsball game. This is where you and your team try to capture your opponent's flag and bring it back to your station without being marked by a paintball. At the same time, you must defend your own flag. If you are tagged while holding the flag, you must set the flag down where you were hit and head off the field. The first team to place their opponents flag on their own station, wins. There are many variations of Capture the Flag out there but generally speaking, you must obtain the opposition's flag and return it back to your station without being hit by a paintball. This is a timed game, the shorter the time, and the quicker the action. Scenario games can also be played as Woodsball variations. This type of game is the re-enactment of situations or battles that can be carried out on the field. This can be a historical event, a fictional event based on a movie or a book, or something that is completely from the 'directors' imagination. Quite often, these scenarios are played out by teams of 100 players or more and can last over an entire weekend. Each team has a number of missions that they can choose to accept and the team with the most completed missions wins. Being eliminated in this game is only temporary. When tagged, you must check yourself in to your teams field 'hospital' and wait for the next predetermined insertion window and then you can re-enter the game. These Scenario games can become quite involved but don't let that scare you off. There is always room for the beginners as well as the more experienced players. Night Recon is a game for those who enjoy an evening jaunt out in the woods. There is a minimum of three teams with no more than 5 players per team for this game. The game is played in a twenty minute timed interval. Each team should have his or her own flag station and each station should have a different colored pen or crayon attached to the flag station with a string. Each player has a piece of paper or a card that has to be marked with the pen at all stations. Every team starts at separate points and when the game begins, they make their way to a flag station to mark their papers with the different colored pens. Eliminated players cards cannot be used toward the team's total points. Scoring is one point for each mark and five points if the whole team has marks from two flag stations. There is five bonus points awarded for every station after that. The velocity on the Paint guns should be lowered to 220 FPS because of the close quarters of this game. As far as Woodsball games are concerned, the sky is the limit. If you can think of a way to live out your childhood dream of playing Army and incorporate paintball into it, then you can make it happen. If Dungeons and Dragons was your thing, think of a way to make it work on the paintball field. |
